Dragonball Z. An unauthorized (and unprofessional) guide., 28 May 2001

Two words could sum up this book nicely. Nice try. The book would be great if the author and her son spent some more time researching, as all of their information is either wrong or in an order only the bravest would dare to comprehend. One of the character's names is spelt wrong, (which may not seem much, but for a guide it should be correct) the "quotes" in the book are from kids ages 5-12, the episode/saga guide could not possibly be in a worse order, and the author's sense of humour leaves something to be desired. The author spends a lot of the book "explaining" two of the Dragonball Z role playing games her son thought up, with enough numbers to make maths teachers drool. The characters in these games have names like "Oinky Chicken". Oh dear. The book keeps an informal tone throughout. This is not always a bad thing, but by the sixth chapter ("Danny's Top Ten List"), I was beginning to get tired of all the mentions to her wonder-son and their action figures. The blurb screams that "You'll get all the fabulous DBZ facts from a kid's perspective!" However, the blurb also offers "side splitting jokes!" If you read the book, you'll realise what facts are untrue from both these quotes. All in all, this book is an entertaining enough read, but if you're looking for real quality, steer well clear.

How on earth this was published I'll never know..., 9 Aug 2002
Being a massive DBZ fan, it was disapointing reading a book written by someone with clearly little to no knowledge of DBZ at all. She does not understand why Krillen's name is spelt 'Kurirrin' in Japanese, nor has she ever seen an original Japanese episode, and also voices her doubt that the series was censored (it was; heavily. In fact, DBZ censorship is a massive issue, one which she has completely dismissed). Most of the book is dedicated to her son, his friends, his classes, what he thinks and says. She tells us which action figures she owns and how she plays with them. She even goes on for 3 pages about her daughter's flute lessons. And, commiting a true DBZ sin, she calls Tenshinhan "Tien", his censored name. Also at one point she even states about another character, "I don't know this character's name, but oh well." I recommend you don't buy this book; I have never wasted my money like this before and hope I never do again.

Dannyball Z.....however, a slightly entertaining read, 12 April 2001

I bought this book simply because there are practically no other Dragonball Z books available in the UK, except for Pojo's highly recommended guide to Dragonball Z. If you have watched DBZ on TV then you will know almost everything in the book already: for example the author only really focuses on the Saiyan saga and not much else. The reason why I only awarded the book 2 stars out of 5 is that there are a few errors in the book (wrongly spelt names of attacks , characters and places etc) which, though minor, will irritate a hardcore DBZ fan (like myself) no end. Another reason: the author, Lois, talks a bit too much about her son Danny, whom, though probably a perfectly likeable kid, you will find yourself directing all your frustrations at by the last page of the book. Too much space is wasted talking about him and not enough about Dragonball Z (hence the title of this review- Dannyball Z has a nice ring to it.) A few good things about the book which saved it from getting the lowest rating- the personal insights are a handy guide to a newcomer to the series, and the product and RPG information is pretty sound. The cover is also a nice shade of green.... In conclusion- don't expect an in-depth guide to the full Dragonball Z series, characters and movies. You would be disappointed. To be fair, this is a fairly entertaining half-hour flick-through for when boredom strikes. Good for so-so fans who have seen the show a couple of times and are interested in learning more. Bad for those who tape every episode, collect the action figures, the manga, the posters....You know who you are. (And I'm proud to say I'm one of the latter.)
