4.0 out of 5 stars Another fine Resnick story, 9 Oct 2009

This review is from: Cold Light (Mass Market Paperback)
If further proof were needed that John Harvey's Rensick series is one of the best crime collections around, Cold Light provides it. This mid-series title from the 10 original novels showcases all that is good about Harvey's writing: tight plotting, real, convincing characters, believable settings and an underlying sense of melancholy and despair that runs through the lives of all the people he writes about.

Holding it all together is writing of the finest quality. John Harvey brings his sensibilities as a poet to the craft of crime writing. He never over-does things, but lets the story unfold, and lets the reader fill in some of the blanks.

The books are more powerful as a result, and wonderful to read. At the heart of it all is Charlie Resnick, a man who still cares about what he does, despite being worn down by the sheer effort of it all, and trying to make sense of the madness in the world. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Provincial crime thriller, 2 May 2009
This review is from: Cold Light (Mass Market Paperback)
British police procedural starring DI Charlie Resnick in a series of novels based in Nottingham. There's a killer on the loose kidnapping young girls and it gets personal for Resnick when his own female officer is next in line.

A good solid three star read for British crime fans especially if you have local knowledge of this location. I found the whole thing a bit formulaic and cliched.

It's as though Mr Harvey has a checklist which must be ticked.
Local colour- Notts County shirt
Quirky character- loves jazz, calls cat Dizzy
Topical subject- 'cookery' stuff
Hard hitting- some offensive violence (A gratuitous line which I won't repeat but you'll know when you read it)

This is a worthwhile read but just so routine and by the numbers.
This confuses me as Mr Harvey garners rave reviews. I tried an Elder novel for comparison but with the same result.

I could go on but I think Mr Harvey is a very good author who is not a very good crime writer. Towards the end I lost interest and so did Mr Harvey.
