This book is very good value. It comprises three different novels: Ambulance Ship, Sector General and Star Healer. Besides, it includes an introduction and an essay "The Secret History of Sector General".
James White wrote a whole saga of this hughe, interstelar Hospital, fit to treat all known maladies of all known stellar species.
The main character is physician Conway, but there are other remarkable ones like his fiancee for years, the cinrusskin empath, chief psycologist O'Mara, etc. They strive to save all those "people" they can, no matter how strange and how ignorant they are of their physiology, their uses, or their circumstances. Their main interest is not only to heal, but to show through this act of good will that species can live together in peace.
One of the best things about White's novels is that they are KIND. The author himself felt strongly for tolerance and cooperation (he was an Ulster man) and this transpires in his work.
The situations are bizarre, or dramatic, but never cruel or offensive or disgusting. He writes well, at a steady pace, and the story comes out lightly, you cannot put it down.
Good value, good sci-fi, good fun, good read.
