4.0 out of 5 stars I loved Sulien., 30 Mar 2001
By A Customer
She's one of the most likable main characters in modern literature. Things don't always race, but they are seldom uninteresting. Best of all, at least for me, is that the world is so complete, so full and well thought out. An Arthur clone? I think not. King's Peace is better than almost any Arthur tale, and many times more original.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great worldbuilding., 24 Feb 2001

"King's Peace", Jo Walton's first novel, is well planned and well written. Its an obviously fictional world that's large and intricate and put together with considerable foresight and thoughtfulness. Some reviewers have gone so far as to complain that "King's Peace" is just another rehash of the King Arthur stories. It isn't. Not even close. There are similarities, some of them strong, but it's only enough to flavor the story, not enough to make it in any way seem trite, unoriginal, or lazy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant but Unexciting, 7 Mar 2001
By A Customer
When, early on, a tough warrior informs our heroine that WE don't pay attention to the colour of someone's skin, we realise that this is going to be a Y2K contribution to Arthuriana. The Christianity is sanitised and Disneyised so that our heroine can comfortably remain the model modern skeptic; the hero is a sensitive modern male as idealised by women writers.

Perhaps this author will break through the predictability barrier (and also learn how to structure a novel; the middle is quite awkward). The prose is adequate, the fighting vivid, but this effort is really a lightning bug to Mary Stewart's lightning.

I also loved the detail of Walton's world. What an incredible amount of time she must have spent in developing all of this. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying narrative set in a strangely familiar world
An enjoyable, well-written, first-person narrative that, despite dropping hints at how things will turn out, leaves enough in reserve to surprise. Read more
