this book contains the best short horror stories that Ramsey has written -to my knowledge- the story "looking out" is fiendishly delightful, some other good ones too.

The title may bring to mind more explicit bogeymen but this collection of 20 short horror stories from Ramsey Campbell generally takes a more subtle angle into the supernatural. Obviously there is a fair range covered here, but some repeated themes include the psychological collapse of characters as they drift into realms of madness, characters under threat from hostile modern suburban environments, and the everyday horror of other people from obnoxious English holiday-makers abroad to neighbours and colleages.

As with most anthologies the quality varies somewhat, but Campbell's prose is strong enough to ensure the majority of these stories strike home: personal favourites include a mobile-phone obsessed man's descent into madness on a charity walk ('Going Under'); a guilty accountant who finds himself trapped between his affluent home-life and a darker alternate existence ('The Alternative'); an author under attack from a very bizarre paper salesman ('Out of the Woods'); a newspaper journalist haunted by doggerel of the dead ('McGonnagall in the Head'); the ghost of a bellboy haunting a hotel elavator ('Between the Floors'); a paranoid pensioner haunted by a strange face in his window ('Looking Out'); and - best of all - the delicious jet-black comedy of a religious maniac who imagines himself on a quest to save humanity from itself ('The Dead Must Die').
