5.0 out of 5 stars Great Addition to the Saga of Recluce, 26 May 2001
By the_liche@yahoo.com (Plymouth, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is one of the keys to Modesitt's system of magic in Recluce. Set some 200 years before the Magic of Recluse, it expands on a lot of the subjects raised in the Magic of Recluce. This installment centers around Justen, before he becomes The Grey Master. It looks at how he develops the Grey, and it ends in spectacular fassion with him and Gunnar destroying Fairhaven. Through the book, you are taken on a mystical tour from Recluce, to Candar, to lands beyond that, where Justen becomes one of the Druids in Nylan. All in all a brilliant read and valuable installment in the series, which you'll want to read over and over again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Justin becomes the first Grey Engineer, 11 May 2005
Over 580 pages, but yet another great read. Justin starts as a Black engineer, fairly skilled in fighting, and a good but not great engineer. So how does he excel? - He invents! New weapons to constrain the Chaos White wizards and then.... when things start to get sticky, then he is chased into Naclos where the druids teach him about the Balance. Achieving balance, himself, he can then defeat the Whites. Unfortunately, the balncing effects also reduce Recluce, but thats life.
