Product Description

Product Description

As the head of the fundamentalist Latter Day Saints, a sect of Mormonism based in isolated southern Utah, Warren Jeffs held sway over thousands of followers for nearly a decade. His rule was utterly tyrannical. In addition to coercing young girls into polygamous marriages with older men, Jeffs reputedly took scores of wives, many of whom were his father's widows. Television, radio, and newspapers were shunned, creating an isolated community where polygamy was prized above all else. But in 2007, Jeffs was convicted of rape as an accomplice for his role in coercing a fourteen year old girl to marry her nineteen year old first cousin. After a two-year manhunt that landed him on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list, Jeff's reign was forcefully ended. "When Men Became Gods" traces the rise and fall, offering new revelations into the nearly impenetrable world of the FLDS, a place of 19th century attire, inbreeding, and eerie seclusion, providing readers with a rare glimpse into a tradition that's nearly a century old, but that's only now beginning to gain wide exposure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the read..., 4 Sep 2009
By Chocoholic (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: When Men Become Gods (Paperback)
This book certainly makes for interesting reading. I have read a few books on the FLDS and this one is not bad. While I did not agree with some of the author's opinions and assumptions, I thought the book was well written. I enjoyed reading the perspectives of the people that surround the community, such as the non FLDS police officers, investigators, lawyers, community support workers etc. However, if you are wanting the story of someone who has left a polygamous society, then Caroline Jessop's and Elissa Wall's books would be more appropriate.

4.0 out of 5 stars an interesting read, 6 Oct 2008
By Niccolo65 (Aberdeenshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is well worth reading. It complements Jon Krakauer's book very well, and tells the story of the victims of Warren Jeffs. If anyone is interested in the HBO series "Big Love" then they could do worse than read this book first.
