4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book, 4 May 2009
By Titus Livius (Milan, Italy) - See all my reviews
In recalling the fateful events of the ambush and destruction of three roman legions in Germany, Turtledove chooses to focus mainly on Varus - the Roman governor of supposedly subdued Germany - and Arminius, the leader of the German revolt.

Good attention to historical detail, an interesting father/son relationship between Varus and Arminius deftly exploited by Arminius (not historically based but something "must" have happened to convince Varus to rely so much on Arminius)and the usual smooth and relible writing on Turtledove's part makes this a good addition to anyone's historical fiction library.

I didn't rate it 5 stars because I found the author's other historical fiction (Menedemos & Sostratos series, Justinian and also Household Gods) somewhat more interesting and featuring less trodden paths.

Next time I hope Mr. Turtledove will give us an alternative history ending to the events of 2.000 years ago: what would have happened if Rome had conquered Germany?

1.0 out of 5 stars Turtledove's novel on the Varian Disaster..., 5 Oct 2009
By J. Adams "Maxi" (UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Over the years I have read many historical novels. Some mediocre, some passable, one or two, terrific! As for Harry Turtledove's novel,
"Give me back my Legions!" -Dreadful! It is cliche-ridden throughout:E.g. 'quick as daggers,' 'The German looked daggers at him.'
Stock phrases throughout:-his favourite seems to be, Arminius scowled...
Flat characters and daft dialogue.E.g. "your Excellency, Arminius has arrived. His father is with him, as he was last year." (!!). Or,
But no: the camp or town or whatever you called it...(!) One more:- "I fought for Rome inside Germany. Arminius never has. He never will. He thinks you are a duck, sir. He throws stale bread on the water to make you swim closer. Will you let him grab you?" (!!!!!!!!)
How on earth did the publishers release such trash? I had never read any of Turltedove's 'works'before, and believe me, never shall do again! A waste of money. Sloppy, lazy writing. Most of the historical fact, too, is missing or rather, omitted.E.g. Arminius was Varus' liason officer, appointed by Augustus himself! No mention of this fact!!
