The Grail tarot by John Matthews & Giovanni Caselli, 22 Aug 2007
I just received this deck this morning - and I am stunned by the beauty of the deck. I am the happy owner of most all the John & Caitlin Matthews decks, & have many more by other authors. The art of Tarot and Oracle decks have turned me into a collector (albeit a small one:). The Grail deck is a rare treasure, each card worked out beautifully down to the last card, in minute detail. The colourings are gorgeous. I lift my hat to Mr Caselli, he's a true artist. The book is done in lovely sepia colourings. I am very pleased with it .... there is but one thing that I do have to offer (and sadly) and that is ... I find the cards themselves to be rather thin - meaning that one will have treat them very carefully against scuffing or even folding & creasing them, when shuffling them. I love the deck to bits, but this is a bit of a drawback. Still I hope they sell like hotcakes, because anyone will count themselves truly Blessed to have this beautiful deck. L.B. Netherlands

Why only three stars? I was expecting a deck of 78 original and distinct tarot paintings by Giovanni Caselli, 'inspired by the beautiful Renaissance paintings of Piero della Francesca', and Fra. Angelico, and various other masters of the 15th century and thereabouts. The fact is, to anyone with a knowledge of graphics software, possibly less than a third of the cards in this deck are whole paintings as presented. The rest is a, not particularly careful, example of cut and paste - the six of stones being a glaring expample - the photographic pixels of the Madonna and Child marble statue just cannot blend convincingly. I don't have a problem with graphics software being employed, it's simply that, from the schpiel, I was expecting original paintings. The overall result is an odd, strained jigsaw-puzzle type aura which isn't that pleasing. Conceptually the tarot makes up for it, but if a buyer is expecting a deck with an integrity of visual implementation, the majority of cards, at least with my expectations, are lacking.

Graphically beautiful, 27 April 2009
This is a beautiful themed deck, with some gorgeous cards such as the 'Cosmic Christ'.The cards lay out a rich tapestry and visually are very pleasing, albeit the quality of the card they are printed on lets the deck down, I don't feel it will have the longevity of other decks which are of a higher standard.I have not found the deck as accessible to read intuitively as others such as The Sacred Circle Celtic Tarot for example, or the now out of print wonderful Glastonbury Tarot, but this is just down to a personal preference.
