I am a great fan of the SPQR series. But even a fan has to admit that there is a big quality differences between the books. Some (The Temple of the Muses) were terrible, others (The Sacrilege, Saturnalia) were sublime but this one is certainly Roberts's best one yet. The murder remains mysterious and puzzling to the very end. The writing is excellent. In short, John Maddox Roberts brings Rome back alife again!
