One of the most promising secondary figures in Steve Hamilton's series about reluctant northern Michigan private investigator Alex McKnight has been his teetotal Ojibwa Indian pal, Vinnie LeBlanc. Vinnie mostly kept himself to himself in the first four McKnight adventures but Blood Is the Sky finally lets him loose, and it's both pleasurable and painful to see what results.

Vinnie's younger ex-con brother Tom has disappeared. In violation of his parole, Tom had guided a small contingent of moose hunters into the pacific forests of Ontario, but none of them had returned home on schedule. To assuage Vinnie's worries, McKnight agrees to drive with him into Canada and look for the men. No luck: the owners of a money-losing lakeside lodge where those sportsmen had stayed say they departed days ago. So where did they go? Who were the two other, unidentified guys who came looking for them in advance of McKnight and his friend? And why was the hunters' vehicle abandoned, with their wallets inside, near an Indian reservation? Looking for answers, the detective and Vinnie set off into the woods, where hungry bears are by no means the most dangerous creatures they'll have to face.

Despite its Deliverance-like moments, and an explosively violent conclusion that's not sufficiently foreshadowed, Blood Is the Sky is really a gracefully composed study of character, as focused on Vinnie's strengths and failings as Hamilton's previous novel, North of Nowhere, was on the story of another series regular, bar owner Jackie Connery. Yet McKnight shines here, too, his self-effacing humour keeping readers amused, when they aren't amazed--again--by the lengths to which this supposedly lonerish sleuth will go to help a friend in trouble. --J. Book Description

It is October in Paradise, Michigan, and Alex McKnight is rebuilding one of his cabins with help from Vinnie LeBlanc, his Ojibwa neighbor. They're interrupted when Vinnie is called away to deal with a family emergency - his brother, Tom, has not returned from a hunting trip to Canada. He is already four days overdue.

Alex and Vinnie decide to retrace the steps of the hunting party, driving all the way up as far as the roads will go in northern Ontario. When they arrive at the lodge, they are told that the men had already been flown back from the outpost, and had promptly left to return to Michigan.

But something is not right. Aided by a young Cree Indian and his grandfather, they fly to the remote outpost. Left alone there, they discover a terrible secret.

Now Alex and Vinnie are miles away from civilization, with no food and no weapons. And there's someone out there who definitely does not want them to make it back alive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling On More Than One Level, 3 Jan 2004

This review is from: Blood is the Sky (Hardcover)
After his recent adventures, chronicled in the previous book North Of Nowhere, Alex McKnight is attempting to pick up the pieces of his life by rebuilding his cabin with the help of Vinnie Le Blanc, an Ojibwa indian who is his friend and neighbour. Breaking the reverie that comes with the rebuilding process is news that Vinnie's brother Tom is way overdue from a hunting expedition in Canada where he was to act as a guide. The two men decide to head north in a bid to track Tom's movements and try to find him. From here the story turns into a fight for survival in the wilds of North Canada.

As Alex and Vinnie uncover the story of what happened up at the hunting lodge, more questions come up than are answered. They realise too late that their lives have become endangered but can't work out why. Of course, they aren't given terribly long to work on the why part of the question because they are kept busy working overtime trying to save their own skins.

It's a tantalising thriller that had me guessing right up towards the very end. Thrown in with this are the wonderful descriptions of the untamed wilderness of Ontario that was brilliantly captured by Hamilton. I found the story compelling reading on more than just one level making it doubly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blood is the Sky is excellent., 7 Jul 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Blood is the Sky (Hardcover)
Alex McKnight agrees to help out his friend, Vinnie in trying to establish what has happened to Vinnie's brother Tom. Their subsequent investigations, in which the plot gradually takes shape, lead both Vinnie and Alex into the Canadian backwoods. It is here, in this remote region, they find themselves abandoned. They have no way of escape, are without adequate food and clothing and have become the prey of ruthless hunters, determined that they do not reveal the secret of what they have discovered.

This is a very different PI book. Certainly, a very different Alex McKnight novel. Although the whole book is still carefully plotted with the story lines as concise as ever.

But what gives the book it's real definition is the bond of friendship that grows between Vinnie and Alex. The short one liners's of dialogue create the sense of vulnerability that both are facing in this remote place. The dangers they are being forced to encounter add to their individual strengths, and these they combine to devastating effect.

As this isn't enough, Steve Hamilton even manages to create a romantic link between Alex, and the attractive Natalie Reynaud of the Ontario Police.

Blood is the Sky, is such a compelling read, it is hard to put the book down. Yet, at the same time, I did not want to reach the end. More like this, please, Mr Hamilton!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Steve Hamilton does it again, 23 Jul 2009

This review is from: Blood is the Sky (Paperback)
This is the 5th book in the Alex McKnight series by Steve Hamilton and if you are new to the series, consider yourself lucky (but start at the beginning, with A Cold Day In Paradise). This one picks up shortly after North of Nowhere (Alex McKnight) as Alex is rebuilding his cabin. His friend Vinnie asks Alex to travel to Canada with him to help find his brother, who has not returned from a hunting expedition.

It's a thrilling read, one of those books that keeps your up late, turning the pages. The first two thirds keep building the tension, building the tension, and then when that resolves there are a couple of twists to hold your interest.

I am so in love with the way that Steve Hamilton writes. He has such a wonderful sense of place - I feel like I know Paradise, Michigan now and that I'd find Alex living there if I were only to visit it. (I was girlishly delighted to look in the atlas and discover that it's a real place). All of his characters are so beautifully realised and the conversations that they have all feel so natural. He's a fine writer and this book is as good as or better than the others I've read to date.
