2.0 out of 5 stars A weak show, 5 Mar 2008
By M. D. Westbrook "Markje" (Northern Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a weak attempt at the business of biography on America's most idiosyncratic writer, film maker and acting teacher. Although crammed with information for the Mame-Geek, it has little consistency in its telling. Many stories are brief or skimmed over, some are told confusingly out of choreographic order. Since the writer only spent a brief time with Mamet and his family, he has little of the insight of someone able to get close to Mamet. Equally, other's descriptions of Mamet are all too brief and lacking the breadth or depth of scope. Almost all of the stories can be found elsewhere, making the book a culmination of stories one could glean from the Internet.

Highly disappointing as a work of biography, spending much time dissecting the plays for information about Mamet. Surely a biography needs the same suspense as a novel, it just happens to be about someone factual, otherwise we get bored. Little inspirational or aspirational here. Worth getting for the Mamet-lover, but prepared to be disappointed.
