5.0 out of 5 stars A really great read, 4 May 2004
This review is from: The Year of Ice (Paperback)
I read this over the course of a bank holiday weekend - it was immediately engaging and (sorry to be cliched) I really couldn't put it down. Really well-written characters and an engaging story. It is set in smallish-town America. The lead character is a young good-looking guy finishing high school and heading off to college - gay but too afraid to do anything much about it yet. The story concentrates on his relationships with his philandering father, his hilarious Irish Aunt Nora and his friends. Funny and touching. Give it a go. There are more detailed reviews on www.amazon.com too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really well written, 4 Jan 2005
By Simon Imrie (Belfast, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Year of Ice (Paperback)
Bought this book only because of the other reviews on the site and i wasn't disappointed. I don't really read alot of gay fiction - bit bored of the homosexuality is ok - really its ok - message of alot of books but the year of ice didn't fall into this trap.

Very funny in places - and the main character is believable, warm and endearing and brian malloy writes with cutting honesty. The story revolves around Kevin and his rather disfunctional family life and although i was left wanting some answers at the end, i liked the fact that Kevin's problems were not all solved.

This is not challenging, great literature but its very addictive and well worth a try.

Write another one Mr Malloy - and please let Kevin get laid!!

3.0 out of 5 stars May appeal to teenagers, 3 Dec 2004

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Year of Ice (Paperback)
The best things about Year of Ice are that it can be very funny and is not sentimental (though slightly touching in parts). It's the coming-out story of an eighteen-year-old guy who has the good fortune to be gay and the bad luck to live in Minneapolis (and you can substitute almost any British provincial town for that). It is clearly intended for readers younger than me, and those of us who have turned grey may find the book irritating in parts. The central character, Kevin, is inarticulate, totally self-obsessed, and has a tendency to resort to violence to resolve any situation. Because the story is told from his point of view, we tend to sympathise with him (his Mum died and his Dad is alcoholic). On the other hand, many young people have worse problems and don't become the playground bully. It's difficult to maintain interest in a person's story when you really don't like him. I was glad it ended on an optimistic turn because there seemed to be a chance that Kevin might at last find himself in an environment in which there are alternatives to violence and where he might start to think about someone other than himself. Luckily, it is quite a short book.

5.0 out of 5 stars love in a cold climate
A very sweet, sincere, authetic novel. Kevin is a great protagonist, such a roughboy romantic, an alpha male with a secret. Moody and misunderstood, silent and very sexy. Read more
