Product Description

Product Description

NOT EVEN MY NAME is a rare eyewitness account of the horrors of a little-known, often denied genocide, in which hundreds of thousands of Armenian and Pontic Greek minorities in Turkey were killed during and after World War 1. But NOT EVEN MY NAME is first and foremost Sano Halo's brilliant and mesmerising memoir, written in haunting and eloquent prose that evokes the suspense of the best told tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tale for Today's Atrocities, 12 Sep 2005
By Caro Green (Exeter, Devon United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The voice of a young girl recounting this rare documentation of human genocide from the past.. as vivid and fluid as a piece of poetic fiction yet cleverly interspersed with fact ..bears the stamp of great literature.
The art of biographical writing is clearly apparent.. as the minutiae of painstaking research informs the reader intermittently, allowing us to step back from the awfulness of each encounter, whilst absorbing their reality through chilling fact. The evidence given is in the writer's journey with her mother, to the scene of these past crimes, in Turkey.
I wept throughout this book yet could not put it down. This tale is primarily one of human courage amidst the horror and hell of mass murder. The survival of this character gives testimony to the saying, 'the truth will out', for Sano's footsteps are retraced and her story written - a lifelong promise kept by her daughter Thea.
This is a book to warn (or remind) us of the powers of those in authority who chose to cover up and deny such atrocities..which is just as relevant today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, 2 Aug 2002
By A Customer
In this world of massive book publishing, it is a rare treat to find a book that really moves you. This is what Thea Halo's book does. It is the story of her mother and her family, who were forced, along with millions of others, to leave their homes in Pondos of Asia Minor and walk endless miles towards Syria. It is also about how she rebuilt her life in the USA. A fascinating, moving and real story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A slap in the face for revisionists, 5 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Thea Halo's book is a stunning indictment of genocide and the attempt by some nations such as Turkey to revise history. Unlike the Holocaust and other genocides of the twentieth century, the Turkish attempt to wipe-out the Pontian Greeks and the Armenians has been hidden and obfuscated. The Turks have never accepted responsibility for their barbaric acts and continue to deny this black page in their history. Even Hitler said, when planning the Holocaust of the Jews 'Who remembers the Armenian genocide by the Turks?'.

This books is a well-written, heart-wrenching account of how a whole population was wiped out and man's barbarity towards man. The Pontian and Armenian genocides are well-documented and all the lying in the world by the Turks will never change this.
A must-read book for anyone who wants a true picture of how Turkey treated and continues to treat it's minorities, namely the Kurds.

5.0 out of 5 stars good story far from reality
Although the story is fluent and stylish, the facts are far from reality and do not give a true insight to the Turkish side. Read more
