Why is Kate Sedley, a fine and intelligent crime writer, languishing in obscurity, in the shadow of many inferior but better publicised authors? She writes with a highly evocative style which captures a period atmosphere far better than all those clumsy 'And I put on my jerkin and hied me hence to the maister, by God's pizzle' tactics overused in this genre; and her plots are simple but clever, never over-reliant on complex reader knowledge of English history, though my wobbly understanding of the Wars of the Roses is now considerably enhanced by her subtle use of it as background shading to her hero Roger's narrative. I'd recommend Kate Sedley to any fan of historical crime - and any other reader looking for a rewarding read.

This chronicle in the series of Roger the Chapman mysteries finds him itching to be off on his travels once again, and the author does not disappoint as she leads Roger, and the reader, on a journey across medieval England which takes in plots and politics as well as the central mystery of whether or not Alison's brother has in fact re-appeared. Highly recommended!
