1.0 out of 5 stars A dreadful book, 27 Dec 2000
By Simon Rockman - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I felt guilty reading this book - it was bought for me as a Christmas present - guilty because I know enough about JKR to know that she'd hate the thought of this kind of intrusion. I wonder if she hates it more or less because it's so badly done. Almost no research went into this book. There is nothing here which has not been reported elswhere, no interviews with JKR herself, no by the sound of it with anyone who knows her. Shapiro struggles to fill 120 pages, spelling her name out in full to stretch it out a bit. Lots of stating the obvious (she was insecure at her secondary school because she was going through puberty - who isn't, she spent train journeys looking out of the window - who doesn't). Most radio interviews have been more revealing. A complete waste of time. Even public knowledge has been skimped on - the book was written very recently yet there is no mention of who is playing which parts in the film, no examples of how they have been changed for translation. There is a vast amount of information on JKR on the internet and almost none has been skimmed off into this book. Just the interview on the BBC's Poetry Please was warmer and enlightening.

It's also very short - 16,000 words or about two weeks work including 'research'. I'm a journalist and I could have done a better job, but I know enough about the subject not to entertain the idea. I think even the publisher has been ripped off by this one.

Don't buy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars I agree - it's a dreadful book, 19 Nov 2001
By A Customer
I bought this book in the US and read it on the flight home. There are some glaring factual errors that made me wonder if the rest of the book is just as bad. For example, Shapiro quotes the name of the London station where trains go to the north as Knights Cross or Knights Crossing. Now I don't blame an American author for not knowing his London geography too well, but since Kings Cross is so central to the Harry Potter stories he should be ashamed of himself. It was also interesting to read how Rowling spent Christmas 2001, seeing as it hasn't happened yet. I thought this book was a waste of money.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good insight, 10 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This was a good look into the sort of things that have influenced the writing of some of the world's most renouned books ( at least they are if you're aged 8- 14) but I could have leant most of it from one of the documentories that were shown when "The Goblet of Fire" came out. A good read for a die-hard adult fan.
