5.0 out of 5 stars Like being in the studio with Elvis, 20 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This is a fascinating book. It has obviously been painstakingly and lovingly researched. It documents all of Elvis' recording sessions in detail. However, the detail doesn't stifle the narrative. You never feel overwhelmed by minutiae. Instead, you get a definite sense of what it was like to be in a recording studio watching the King of Rock and Roll do what he did best. Elvis steps from these pages as a real person who happened to have a talent that rocked the world. Congratulations to the author for tracking down so many intriguing and illuminating moments. He has truly given the rest of us an insight into the talent that was Elvis Presley. The King is dead. Long live the King.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable..., 7 Mar 2007
This magnificent book has a great look at the Elvis Presley's recording career. Every recording session he ever did is painsteakinly documented and analyzed. Jorgensen has listened through great piles of tapes from RCA archives and people who were present at those sessions have been interviewed and with help of those we get (what I believe to be) an intimate look on how Elvis worked on those recordings sessions. The genius of Elvis comes through through his several triumphs and also we read about the pain, dissapointments and the difficulties he suffered in his life. Much more than just a document on life in music. Elvis lived so much of his live through music, so that's why this is so revealing. This is essential Elvis reading.

The recording career of Elvis Presley is hard to pin out. Many of his best recordings were lost as a single B-sides or were never released in any album. So while pouring through Elvis album cataloque (which is huge) sometimes I felt more than lost. What really are essential Elvis records etc. I really couldn't tell. So reading this book really cleared lot of questions about Elvis's recording career and put my own mind at ease. So now I knew lot more how to get my hands on those "lost" Elvis classics.
