4.0 out of 5 stars Well I liked this book. It's a fun read, 3 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Boy Culture (Paperback)
I've read the reviews of past reader for this book and there's definatly a mixed bag of comments. I personally thought it was great. It's a tale that has a story as well as little erotic description to add some spice. The story concerns an unnamed prostitute and his love and lust for one his house mates, Andrew, and the confused sexual frustrations with the other, Joe. To sum up this book it's light hearted stuff. Just something fun to read on a wintery night or on a hot beach somewhere, perhaps. My argument for those few who didn't enjoy this is to say this book certainly isn't D.H Lawrence, but if you're looking for heavy going literature then maybe this isn't the one for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me, 23 July 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Boy Culture (Paperback)
I can't believe there are people who did not like this book. Not only did I read it, but I was wise to how short it was and read some parts over and over because I dreaded coming to the end of it. It is sad and funny and a very quick read that left me screaming "SEQUEL!" at the end of it. In an age where writers are struggling to stand out with impressive and long-winded stories, this was simple and entertaining. But it's simplicity is not a flaw. In fact, I wish more novels were written this way - unassuming and unpretentious. Matthew Rettenmund's writing is like a kick in the nuts, and I mean that in a good way. It grabs you and doesn't let go.

I read this on a plane while returning from a vacation in Los Angeles, where I spent a lot of time in West Hollywood, watching men dance around each other, pair off and return the next night just as unfulfilled. He put this into words so well and I'm amazed he isn't world famous by now. I plan to read this at least two more times. But don't listen to me ramble on about it. Scroll back up the page and order it. Go! Go!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book You Never Want To Finish, 7 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Boy Culture (Paperback)
This was one of the best books I've ever read! The characters are simply wonderful and you totally fall for them all - and, best of all, the main character doesn't turn out to be one of those annoying "Hookers with a heart of gold" types - he has faults and they only make him more lovable. I truly missed these guys after the book was gone and I can only hope that they will return one day...

The writing is fast-paced, clear, and to the point: sex, all of it, is wacky! And how we go about getting some is even wackier! Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Provocative and hilarious
This is one of the best novels I've read this past year. Insightful into the gay 90's and funny, witty and very, very hot, I strongly recommend this hilarious novel.

1.0 out of 5 stars a complete waste of time and money

4.0 out of 5 stars A deliciously bitchy, yet layered and insightful, read

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Cute
The author wants to prove he is a talented writer by holding on to this creativity like a security blanket. It makes for a shallow, tepid, ridiculous romp through nothing.
