With style, Helen Hackett's book provides a crucial reassessment of Elizabeth's association with the Virgin Mary. In this book she reduces the emphasis that has been placed one the unifying motives bethind Elizabeth's affinity with Mary, seeing it not as an appeal to the Catholic population of sixteenth century England but rather an assertion of Elizabeth's supremity as a female in a male dominated world.
This book is invaluable in any investigation into gender, sexuality and the many myths that surround arguably England's greatest queen
