Product Description

Synopsis
Based on the author's year-long series in Christianity and Renewal. A brilliant flash of light ...the feeling of being shaken like a rag doll ...and suddenly the world changes completely. Catapulted forty years into the future, Nick Page wakes up in a Britain where furniture talks, egg-like pods are the mode of transportation -- and the church as we know it has disappeared. In an age where virtual reality is a lifestyle and technology exalts convenience at the cost of personal dignity, Nick faces the difficult questions: Why has the church disappeared? Can we do anything to change? And, why is no one willing to tell Nick how he died? The Church Invisible is a wonderfully inventive look at the future of the UK church. Engaging, provocative and very, very funny, this book challenges the church to change. Based on the latest research, it goes beyond dry statistics to weave a story that explores the issues facing the church of today. The future of the church depends on whether we will value what God values. In the words of Nick's guide, Lydia, 'It's not enough to talk about the good news. We have to be the good news.'

5.0 out of 5 stars I smell burning - it's the rubber hitting the road......, 16 Jul 2004
By A Customer
this book echoed many of the hopes and fears I feel about the christian church but also offered a clear factual overview of the current situation. Its compulsive reading - all the sci fi details are imaginative and strangely believable. As ever Page's wit hits the spot, in this achingly honest MOT. An overdue wake up call for all chriatians. Fiction? I don't think so.

5.0 out of 5 stars A witty allegory with a powerful message, 8 Dec 2004

As with much of Page's other writing, this book works on several levels. With echoes of "Screwtape", Nick and Lydia disucss what has become of the church forty years hence in a witty but profound way. The futuristic concepts in the book are plausible and amusing. Most importantly, however, the book serves to challenge ecclesiastical complacency and serves to high light the reasons for dwindling church attendance. Humorous, very readable and with a powerful message - this is a must who have found traditional church practices are not developping their christianity and who are looking for new ways to grow spiritually.

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging, different and funny, 18 Jun 2007
By Andrew Guilder (Devon, UK) - See all my reviews

So I've always like Nick Page books ever since I bought a copy of Six Days from the church book store, and with recent releases including "And Now Let's Move into a Time of Nonsense: Why Worship Songs Are Failing the Church", the Tabloid Bible and the Bible Book I thought I'd take a look at the Church Invisible.

In the Church Invisible Page takes us 40 years into the future where it seems to all extents and purposes that the church has died. With his guide Lydia leading him through a strange new world with Egg Shaped Pod transportation and adverts that walk through you, he learns of the reasons why the church has died. The narrative is interupted at various stages by Stephen who answers the questions that readers may be asking at each stage, providing insight, a second point of view and lots of factual information. This mix of narrative gives the book a very round feeling, though it does exclude it from the late night reading pile as it's digs a bit too deep into the mind!

The story is of course labelled as fiction, but I think sadly that the matter of the book is very real. There are a number of issues which as a church we need to sit and look at honestly here and these are represented greatly by the accompanying questions at the end of the book. This gives us more than a "Christian Novel", this opens the door to this being a useful small group material, something which I hope to do in the future.

In conclusion then this book is challenging, it's different from you're average novel and yet it has the characteristic Page humour that you'd expect. It's well worth a read :)
