Book Description
Combining scientific research and dramatic narrative, this is the first book to seriously explore the relationship of the near death experience and traditional Christian experience

From the Author
presents path-breaking new data from a major NDE study.
"Light and Death" is not just another interpretive look at the near-death experience (NDE). Instead, it presents actual data from a clinical study involving 160 patients, 47 of whom survived a carefully-documented NDE, and holds fascinating implications for:

1. Science: One patient was documented to have a temperature of 58 degrees Fahrenheit; no heartbeat, respiration, or blood pressure; and a nonfunctioning brain stem and cerebral cortex. While in this condition, her head was drained of all blood! She encountered the deepest NDE of the study and was able to accurately perceive visual and auditory details from an "out-of-body" location. This case with its extensive medical documentation raises pivotal new questions about our scientific understanding of dying and the moment of death.

2. Medicine: The results of this study are combined with other published medical research to propose for the first time that the powerful psychodynamics within an NDE may actually determine the physical outcome of a cardiac arrest, and that NDE aftereffects may significantly promote long-term survival and healing.

3. Spirituality: The study uncovers surprising new associations between the NDE, prayer, religious beliefs and psychic experiences. Some of these findings directly challenge those of other widely-read NDE reports.

4. Theology: Carefully using the results of the study and extensive biblical reference, I conclude that the NDE is best understood as a spiritual experience of the soul separating from the dying physical body.

2.0 out of 5 stars I was generally disapointed in "Light and Death"., 14 April 1999
By A Customer
This book is written from the perspective of a conservitive Christian with extensive knowledge and access to NDEs. Scripture is used to interpret NDEs. When NDEs agree with the Bible, they become prof that the scriptures are inerrant and when NDEs don't, it is because evil has tainted the experience. Purely from a Christian point of view.. Not recommended for those looking for a more universal or balanced perspective.

3.0 out of 5 stars More propaganda?, 13 April 1999
By A Customer
I am surprised to see someone as intelligent as Michael Sabom M.D. trying to pawn off his religious beliefs by way of the near-death experience. The NDE does not prove ANYTHING and never will. It is a human experience that reflects the culture the experiencer lives in. The fact that people are able to function in another modality of consciousness has been demonstrated time and time again by people all over the world and from different religious beliefs. But it does not prove the existence of their gods. Sabom neglects to mention that many Christians who once embraced Christianity dumped it like a hot potatoe when they came back. Others of no religious belief embraced Christianity. But they might just as easily have embraced Islam if they had been living in an Islamic country or Buddhist religion had they been brought up in Buddhist environment. None of that is support for the validity of the religion itself. People take what is handy and comfortable with. I find it difficult to believe that Sabom supports such sloppy thinking. But then again, critical thinking does not appear to be on the top ten list of subjects pushed in our school system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sabom thinks Moody and Ring are leaning toward a New-Age..., 14 April 1999
By A Customer
Dr.Sabom makes an excellent point in pointing out that death is a process rather than some definitive point of "no return." However I do not agree with him thinking that Dr. Moody and Dr.Ken Ring are forging a New Age theology. But even if such a theology were to come into being what difference does it make to Sabom? Is his religious belief so fragile that he can't accomodate the feelings of those who diverge from HIS path? Sabom's book is quite refreshing when compared to Dr.Maurice Rawlings near-death research. Dr.Rawlings, a fundamentalist Christian, tries to frighten people into accepting Christianity by telling them that if they don't accept his version of jesus they can expect a Hellish near-death experience. What a small time Jesus this must be! Dr.Sabom is to be commended for presenting such a well thought out presentation of the near-death subject. His book is very thought provoking.
