A bit unrealistic and a steep price for small book., 27 Nov 2009
Gabriel "Gabe" McQueen returns to Wilson Creek, Maine, just as an ice storm cranks up. His father, the sheriff, and his men are busy preparing for a sudden ice storm and dealing with a wreck. When Gabe offers to help, his father asks him to check on Lorelei "Lolly" Helton because there is no way to notify of her of the sudden ice storm.
Gabe and Lolly have not seen each other in fifteen years. They certainly were never friends. Every time they met tempers burst. But Gabe drives to the Helton house. The house is on the mountainside, just out of town. When his truck slides into a ditch due to the ice accumulating, he hikes the rest of the way. Upon arriving, Gabe knows something is wrong. Two people with guns, obviously high on meth, show in the down stairs window. The upstairs window shows Lolly, preparing to escape.
Gabe and Lolly find themselves fleeing through the woods, on rough terrain, in the middle of a dangerous ice storm with two killers on their tail.
** TWO STARS! This novel is a small hardback with about two hundred pages. The price is steep for such a short book. The time frame of the story is only a day or two. I think it is pretty unrealistic to expect two people who hardly tolerated each other in the past and have not seen each other in fifteen years to suddenly fall in love almost over night. In my opinion, the chase scenes are thrilling, but the story is unbelievable and not well executed. **

A CHILLING THRILLER, 12 Dec 2009
Broadway and television actor Fred Sanders delivers a chilling reading of this story of two people seemingly trapped in a killing ice storm. Of course, the setting is frigid but it's Sanders's professional delivery that takes the story to sub zero heights off suspense.
Mystery maven Linda Howard has delivered a shorter than usual tale with ICE, but it starts off with a hook and keeps you guessing until the last sentence. Gabriel McCain was looking forward to coming home from the service to Wilson Creek, Maine. He liked his small town - it was solid, secure, and he was pleased that his 7-year-old son, Sam, was growing up in this environment. It was holiday time; he couldn't wait to see Sam and his dad, Harlan, the town's sheriff.
However, his welcome home was brief because Harlan had a job for him - go out into the middle of nowhere during an impending major storm and make sure Lolly Helton is safe. The elder McCain hasn't heard from her in a while and he's concerned since she's out there alone, looking over the Helton house prior to selling it. Lolly was one of the last people Gabriel wanted to see but he could hardly say no to the sheriff! So, he went into a storm that even to hardy Mainers could mean danger and death.
"Ice was ten times worse than a blizzard, in terms of damage. Maine had taken two hits from ice in the past ten or twelve years, but both times the storm had missed this area. That was good then, but bad now, because it meant there was a lot of weakened timber that had been spared before but would now be coming down under the weight of the ice, crushing cars and houses, taking down power lines and leaving hundreds of square miles in the cold and dark. Ice was like a crystal hurricane, destroying everything it touched."
It's near dark when he arrives at the Helton home. Ever on alert he sees strangers inside the house, one of them is armed. By sheer dint of luck and courage he's able to get Lolly out of the house, but out means literally outside, trapped and hunted in an unforgiving ice storm. How could they possibly survive?

Mistle Toe & LOLLY~ a HOT read on a Cold nite~ excellent~, 10 Nov 2009
Christmas is on the way~ but Lolly plans to close up and sell her child hood home~ she has NO fond childhood memories in this Maine town. A HUGE ICE storm is on the way and her plans to head to safety in town are stopped when two people to decide to ROB her and hold her captive~ after a near rape Lolly is prisoner in her bedroom while the robbers get HIGH on their own "ICE" (Meth)....
Gabriel McQueen is asked by his father the local Law to go check on LOLLY HELTON~ so he heads to her Mountain home where the ice and cold is just starting~ he gets to freeze his butt on a girl he never liked~ JUST GRAND~ but he soon spots 2 people in her living room with GUNS and getting higher than a kite on "Meth" and soon helps Lolly out of her bedroom window now they are the HUNTED~ a fast paced thill game of hide and seek in darkness and ice has the two armed NUTS hot on their trail~
MEET Niki and Darwin two of Howard better "NUTS" high on drugs they feel NO pain and keep on going like the Terminator what will it take to stop them? a life and death fight takes BOTH Gabe and Lolly to come out alive.
a Howard trade mark is giving the "view " of Psychos and this Couple~ are certainly Linda Howards BETTER and more entertaining duos.
think Cover of Night and Up Close and Dangerous and you have the fast paced tension and thrills~ excellent~ how does a frozen couple heat up FAST? a hot shower where a HOT sexy encounter saves both "body heat AND conserves water~
this book is only 208 pages but it flows along very well and is a fast read~ a thriller you will not put down~ I ONLY wished it were LONGER~ I will just read it twice
I give it 5 out of 5~
a HOT read for a Cold Nite~
