5.0 out of 5 stars She's done it again!, 12 Aug 2006

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Soul Kitchen is the third book in Brite's 'Liquor' series ( or the fourth if you count The Value of X!)It could be read on it's own if you haven't read the others, but I would recommend starting at the beginning.

Like the others, it is set in a pre-Katrina New Orleans and involves the two chefs Rickey and G-man. The chefs run a successful restaurant called Liquor, and in this novel they are approached by ex-con Milford Goodman (recently proved innocent) for employment.

Goodman starts off in the kitchen at Liquor, but his talent is clear so when an opportunity comes up Rickey puts him forward as head chef at a new venture 'Soul Kitchen' - a restaurant on a casino boat.

It turns out that one of the restaurant backers has an axe to grind with Goodman, and Rickey finds himself in the middle. Throw in a few problems with prescription drugs and another bloke trying to steal G-man away and it's a recipe for disaster (pardon the pun.)

If you have read PZB's other Liquor novels, expect more of the same. If you're more used to the horror, you'll find this really different but equally as good, if not better. It's a lot like a fictional version of Bourdain's 'Kitchen Confidential' but with a good plot.

I wish she'd write faster, I can't wait for the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book like a gourmet meal-perfect ingredients perfectly prepared., 21 Mar 2007
By David G. Sheehan "we of me." (Brighton) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Where do I start? I first read "Exquisite Corpse" and thought "Holy Sh**- this gal can WRITE! - but would I want to meet her on a dark night?" Read "The Value of X"- loved it. Read the next two Rickey and G-man and now I was hooked. She can write -and then some- and boy would I love to meet her now! The restaurant background has remained compulsively interesting through all three books and they are the best and most moving novels about a happy marriage that I have ever read.Claudia - eat your heart out! And then there's the suspense!! Will Rickey swallow his Pride and get their indispensible Dessert Chef back into the fold. Will G-man be unfaithful? [Please God -no NO!] Will Rickey be able to bin the prescription drugs. Will they buy the camp ground [Rickey -Rickey- Katrina's on her way!!!] Can I wait till the next episode? Well yes - but with difficulty [Poppy - get political with this one!] Finally: the the book ends with an hilarious "Meshugga Cuisine" meal ----and a sob [from me]--just kidding. If you haven't already, start with "Value of X."
