Product Description

Product Description
First time in paperback: A New York Times best seller and "a masterful treatment of the Titanic disaster"-Walter Lord, author of A Night to Remember. This passionate yet balanced narrative explores every facet of the Titanic 's history, including her spectacular conception in an Irish shipyard and the ambitious modern-day attempts to salvage her. The familiar story of the RMS Titanic from her encounter with an iceberg to her demise some three hours later, taking with her more than fifteen hundred peoplestill looms large in the popular imagination, and in Daniel Butler's as well. He studied the Titanic 's history for thirty years, intensively compiling facts about the disaster and the players involved (from Captain Smith and his crew to the ill-fated third-class passengers). He even made the startling discovery of a nearby ship that ignored the Titanic 's distress call because the shipmates were afraid to awaken their captain. Drawn from primary sources and period accounts, this new narrative puts the disaster into historical context and serves as an essential resource for scholars of Titanic lore.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 28 Sep 1999
By A Customer
No new facts emerge, this is a dramatised version of the two Public Enquiries, which are far from infallible. Mr Butler has accepted their findings word for word and has made no effort to uncover the real truth. Good read, despite errors, but please read the masterful Titanic, end of a dream before this one for an authentic whiff of the year 1912. Otherwise, a useful general overview of the disaster, but no classic.

2.0 out of 5 stars Read "A Night to Remember" instead, 23 Jul 1999
By A Customer
Mr. Butler appears to have taken a good deal from Walter Lord's "A Night to Remember." One would expect much more from someone claiming to have researched an issue for 30 some years. What concerns me most is the issue of credibility. Some of Mr. Butler's claims as to education, military, etc., cannot be verified. Thie leads one to wonder what else is "fiction" while reading the book. When reading something written by an historian, one must feel confident that one is reading truth, in all it's facets. This cannot be clouded by questions relating to other non-related ares; however, I found myself questioning simply due to this. I wanted to read the book and believe it, but the nagging questions were always present. Similarities to A Night to Remember would lead me to recommend one skip this book, and read A Night to Remember instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stale Titanic Book, 23 May 1999
By A Customer
Butler has many mistakes that need to be corrected in this book. I counted 40 major needless errors. When writing a book on a subject like this is a difficult task. Butler took the easy way out by copying other people's work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written Titanic book
Being very blunt, I can say with all honestly that Mr. Butler copied A Night to Remember almost word for word. He also never corrected any of Lord's mistakes. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect; but not bad
