Product Description

Product Description

}Charlie Chaplin (18891977) revolutionized the language of cinema and became one of the most loved performers of all time. But he was also a man plagued by loneliness and driven by the search for artistic perfection. His life was an extraordinarily dramatic one, and David Robinson explores the often tragic story of Chaplins alcoholic father; his mentally disturbed mother; his marriages to very young women; the white slavery case against him; and his persecution by anti-Communist forces during the McCarthy era, which ultimately forced Chaplin to leave America. Chaplinthe only biography written with full access to his archivescontains many provocative revelations about his private life, romances, business dealings, and the making of his magical films. The text is studded with unexpected gems, from the multilingual lyrics of his song in Modern Times (the first time his voice was heard on the screen) to the step-by-step choreography of his celebrated dance with the balloon globe of the world in The Great Dictator . The author tells of the many famous figures who sought Chaplin out, including Picasso, Gandhi, and Krushchev. The book vividly recreates the different worlds in which Chaplin moved: from Victorian to Edwardian London, through the glamorous birth and sad decline of Hollywoods studio system, to the nightmare of McCarthyism, after which America once again came to adore the Little Tramp.Illustrated with eighty pages of rare photographs from the family albums, Chaplin contains a detailed chronology, filmography, list of theater tours, a summary of the secret FBI file on him, and a Chaplin whos who. This is the definitive and monumental biography of a mesmerizing artist. }

5.0 out of 5 stars IN THE LIMELIGHT, AGAIN., 25 April 2002
This is David Robinson's updated version of "Chaplin, His Life & Art" and it contains an absolute wealth of information about Chaplin before, during and after his life. Aside from Chaplin's own "My Autobiography" this is the closest you can get to understanding the man. Whereas his own book was published in 1964 and goes no further, Robinson's biography gives us the full story from Chaplin's poverty stricken childhood, through to his days with the Karno troupe, onto his first love Hetty Kelly, then to America where he found fame and fortune to the extent of which he'd never dreamed of. The darker side of this genius' life is also delved into with the FBI's unrelenting persecution of the man resulting in his leaving the USA forever. David Robinson has carried out some painstaking research here, there's even a list of Chaplin's early tours of Great Britain before he became synonymous with a cane. If you want to know about Charlie Chaplin then this is the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars definitive is THE word., 6 Dec 2006

i've heard of the numerous books that have been published for the past several decades about comedy genius charlie chaplin; they are meant to range from "very good" to "awful."
however, david robinson has really pulled out all the stops with this one; god knows how long it must have taken him to complete the original manuscript. judging by the sheer volume, he must have spent years researching his subject before finally putting pen to paper.
just about everything you could hope to find is covered here; there are even a few excerpts taken from an F.B.I file that was kept on chaplin. the number of photographs in the biography totals about 120 and highlights his long life perfectly.
sometimes, details of his films(especially his feature ones) are summed up from a few pages to whole chapters. they make for fascinating reading.
i'm particularly glad that the book covers chaplin the man as well as the performer. his struggle with his povery-stricken childhood, insecurity about inheriting his mother's insanity etc. but also, his incredible skills, not to mention his dedication to his craft, are constantly referred to throughout; writing(both the dialogue and music), editing, directing and performing of course. he has certainly earned the "genius" tag in my opinion.
apparently, this book was one of two sources used for the biopic directed by richard attenborough(the other was chaplin's memoirs published in 1964). what better choice could there possibly be?
miss this, miss out.
