Review
"Assuming that the more you know about a task the better you are likely to perform it then this book should be studied in depth by every aspiring academic scientist. However, they would also benefit just from browsing through this book. It is packed with useful tips on how to solve problems that few rookie academic scientists will have imagined but most will encounter. Its humorous style makes the book easy to read but its lessons can prevent serious problems. On a first casual reading the rookie scientist will find this book amusing and informative. However, the book will become even more valuable as they reread it again in subsequent years when they encounter the inevitable hurdles that arise to block their path to success."
(Charles P. Moran, Ph.D., Emory University School of Medicine)
"Jerry Boss is one of our very best scientists and Susan Eckert is one of those rare administrators devoted to creatively supporting the faculty. There is something useful in this book for everyone, regardless of their position and experience. Most importantly, close attention to what they say can stop someone inadvertently sabotaging their own career. The message is simple - focus on what is important; guard your time; seek out and listen carefully to advice and criticism. The book is full of practical solutions to real issues that arise in every academic career."
(Gordon Churchward, Ph.D., Emory University)
"Drs. Boss and Eckert write an exceptionally useful book for all who consider and enter academic scientific careers. I wish I had this book when I began; it contains all the secrets for success. The book is well written and a highly enjoyable read being both funny yet serious. As achairman, I am going to get this book for all my junior faculty."
(Stephen T. Warren, PhD, FACMG, William Patterson Timmie Professor of Human Genetics, Chairman of the Dept. of Human Genetics, Emory University School of Medicine)
"[T]he book takes the guesswork out of an academic life and environment. ... I highly recommend this book to every graduate student so that they are prepared for the academic calling and can make the most of it. I would further recommend this book to all established academicians so that they could have a better perspective on a graduate student, fellow, and a starting assistant professor and encourage them to become good members of the academic society. The book is priced such that a graduate student can afford to buy one, or perhaps their mentor may be generous enough to gift one."
(Kailash Gupta, NIAID, NIH)

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful Career Guidance for Research Scientists - in the USA, 10 Feb 2004
By John Walsh (Bangkok, Thailand) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There is always space for a new book providing useful and accurate advice for graduate students wishing to pursue a career in research. The career path in academia is uncertain and there is little sensible discussion in public as to what scientists actually do and what life at a university is like. Consequently, the advice provided in this book is both useful for those considering such a career and those charged with providing career advice.

Since the information provided is slanted heavily towards the biomedical sciences in the USA, much of what is presented will be of limited usefulness to people in other disciplines or countries - but much of the information will nevertheless be useful. The book is written in a sensible, practical fashion that should be useful and applicable in a wide range of situations and I can imagine many libraries will find this to be a useful addition. It is supplemented by a CD which would help to keep information updated.

As long as the reader does not expect the book to provide guaranteed ways of publishing papers and gaining grants, then reading this or, more likely, referring to it for specific tips about writing and reviewing grants, organising a laboratory or keeping track of post-doctoral students, should provide a worthwhile experience.
