Product Description

Synopsis
Life after Suicide: A Ray of Hope for Those Left Behind begins with personal and often painful journeys into the scarred psyches of people who lost a loved one to suicide. When the author's husband killed himself, she had a choice: either hide behind denial or tackle her grief head-on. Beginning with her own story of unfinished personal affairs, Ms. Ross also includes accounts of others who have struggled with recurring feelings of abandonment, rejection, and stigma while moving forward to stages of healing and restoration of faith in themselves. She then describes the dynamics of after-suicide bereavement and gives specific suggestions for helping survivors, children, and others. The author also discusses the ethical debate over suicide as a sin, widowhood by suicide, the delicate responsibilities of the coroner or police, and the importance of support groups. Ms. Ross presents her own reflections on suicide in moral, philosophical, and social terms - and the impact of the dysfunctional family - and explores possible influencing factors for both the act of suicide and society's attitude.

Backed by years of research and her extensive work with survivors and support groups, this is a valuable guide for recovering from grief, offering useful information for both survivors and those who work with them. Capped by a comprehensive grief and postvention resource guide, Life after Suicide stands as an important resource for libraries, crisis centers, funeral homes, hospices, and other caregiving organizations.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent resource for anyone who has survived a suicide, 19 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Betsy Ross' book Life After Suicide: A Ray of Hope for Those Left Behind is an incredible resource for anyone who has experienced a suicide. Seven months ago, a close friend's husband committed suicide. I was desperate to know more about what my friend would experience as a result of this life changing event. I needed to know how I could help; if I even could. The book is full of emotion; Betsy Ross eloquently describes the feelings that encompassed her in the years following her ex-husband's suicide. It was a starting point for me to communicate with my dear friend. I would never be able to truly comprehend what emotions my friend was experiencing, but I could at least be better prepared to actively listen, to empathize. The book provided many varied suicide experiences such as husbands, daughters, grandfathers, and brothers, to name a few. Sadly, I realized the path my friend's life was taking would be a very difficult one with many ups and downs. Reading other's experiences, although emotional, gave me comfort in knowing there is some "hope" down the road. In addition to personal experiences, this book also provided an abudance of resources, support groups and other materials related to suicide. I was able to follow up on a few of these in my own area which I was able to pass on to my friend. Unfortunately, the hard reality is that suicide support groups are very diffiuclt to come by, which is very scary with the high incidence of suicide survivors committing suicide. Survivor suicides is something that Betsy Ross' book describes in detail and in a small way I was prepared when my close friend told me she had nothing to live for and wanted to end her life. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a caring spirit. You never know when suicide will touch your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life has become easier since reading this book., 29 May 1998
By A Customer
I have not read this book (yet) but, I am the survivor of a suicide. I had a 23 year old brother who decided to hang himself. We were TWINS! ERIC was my life. Now I have to accept the fact that he is gone. I have 2 small children who miss their uncle, because he chose to leave this world because he could no longer deal with LIFE. I hurt every day for my brother, I loved him , and he left me, why I don't know. I have maintained for the past 5 years, because you see WE ARE 28 YEARS OLD! Thank You for your time, Sincerly, Mrs.Lisa M. Harden
