Product Description

Review

"Every library requires a basic source on sailing ship warfare, a need solidly met by Lambert's profusely illustrated survey of the two centuries of naval dominance. Lambert efficiently economizes his text. Twenty maps and perspective schematics of battles support this able introduction."--"Booklist"

Product Description

The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries witnessed the rise of oceanic battle-fighting sail navies, which developed into instruments of worldwide strategic power. Spain, France, Holland and Britain were the leading protagonists but, after the eclipse of first Holland and then Spain, the struggle for history at sea resolved chiefly into a Franco-British conflict. It culminated in Britain's maritime triumph in the Napoleonic Wars and the elevation of the Royal Navy to global dominance. WAR AT SEA IN THE AGE OF SAIL shows how such dominance was eventually achieved, with detailed accounts of each of the key naval conflicts from the highest strategic level right down to the experience of the ordinary sailor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at, not so good to read., 5 Aug 2002

(REAL NAME)
This is a beautifully produced book, excellently designed and superbly illustrated. Not only are the pictures visually inspiring, the captions are informative and pertinent. The only problem lies in the frequent inaccuracies in the text, such as "square rig is the best choice for sailing into the wind" (fore and aft rig is better) or that William of Orange "invaded" England (he was invited in), among many others. If so many self evident mistakes occur with familiar facts one wonders about the reliability of information the reader has not come across before.
