Product Description

Product Description

For those who fought at sea in the Second World War, the battle never ceased. The threat from the skies, from the ocean and from other warships was present twenty-four hours a day. In the words of the author, 'The Second World War demanded more of its sailors than any other war in history, in endurance and the unremitting need to face danger - danger from increasingly lethal weapons and an ever-increasing need for vigilance by night and day.' In this comprehensive history of the Second World War at sea, Richard Hough uses all his powers as a storyteller to bring the reader the danger, the elation and the miseries of battle. His own masterly account of the war is interspersed with personal accounts from those who took part - exclusive stories collected by the author over almost thirty years of interviewing combatants from all sides. The result is the very human story of the six years that constituted the longest battle of the war.

About the Author

Over a long and successful career as a naval historian, Richard Hough wrote numerous books, including the official biography of the Mountbatten family. He died in 2000.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great, rip-roaring read, not detailed history..., 10 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This general history of the naval campaigns of World War 2 is written in a narrative style that fairly rattles along. Even those who know the stories of the major battles and campaigns will likely enjoy the fast pace and dramatic style, but the book is a little light on the fine details. Some readers may find the author occasionally xenophobic (especially towards the French navy's efforts) and somewhat Brit-centric. Nevertheless, it's cracking stuff for a lighter weight introduction to the events of the period. There are more detailed books focussing on specific actins or theatres - personally I recommend "Eagle Against the Sun" (Spector) on the Pacific War and "In Great Waters" (Dunmore) on the Battle of the Atlantic for a bit more nitty-gritty.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction To the War at Sea 1939-1945, 10 Jan 2004
By will1957 (Scotland) - See all my reviews
This book is a good introduction to the war at sea between 1939 and 1945. As its title suggests the book gives a picture of the unrelenting nature of the naval war that took place during the Second World War. It is an excellent book, well written, and with the right balance of narrative and detail. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn a little of the naval war that took place between the combatant nations during the Second World War.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Summary, 4 Jun 2006
I'm no history expert, just someone with in laymans's interest in what happened in the past. I was looking for a book to fill a gap in my knowledge, namely what happened in the Naval Arena during the second world war.

Previous to reading this book I'd got some elementary ideas about what heppened for example the sinking of the Graf Spey and the Bismark, and the U-Boat War, etc (this latter mainly through reading about Enigma and the code breakers).

I found the book an extremely good read. It was varied and covered the whole range of the conflict. It filled out the areas that I already new about in more detail (see above) and also opened my eyes to whole areas I didn't know about and had never thought about (British involvement in the Pacific, Battle of Midway, US triumph in the Pacific, The Battle in the Mediteranean etc., sinking of the Scharnhorst, The Channel Dash, etc.)

It gave me everything I wanted to know in an enjoyable read. A book I'd heartily recommend to anyone in a position similar to mine.

I was a bit dubious about buying this book because it covers such a wide subject. I tend to buy books more on specific events or ships. I was wrong. Read more
