5.0 out of 5 stars Travel Back In Time, 29 Dec 2001
This book really is the business!
The photographs transport you back through the decades of the twentieth century, to a time when football really was the beautiful game, for the working classes.
Witness the picture of the Everton fans turning up at the 1928 Cup Final all dressed in suits, or the West Ham fans, complete with their Hammers and bottles of ale, stood at the front of the terracing, not looking for trouble, but just intent on having a good day out.
John Tennant really has done well to sift through the millions of pictures available to him and to settle on such a meaningful selection.
This book will give great pleasure to the millions of football fans who have been following the game for many years.
Once you pick it up you have great difficulty putting it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia - just like it used to be, 22 Jan 2003

This marvellous book is difficult to pick up, impossible to put down. In nearly 400 extra-large format pages football's past (including the fairly recent past) is captured in a superbly selected, beautifully reproduced set of photographs. Action pictures and photographs of the stars are in the minority, with behind-the-scenes and supporters conveying the changing face of the game. There are big occasions like the first Wembley F.A. Cup Final in 1923 (West Ham fans racing to the stadium), but the incredible double-page spread of hundreds of pitches on Hackney Marshes sums up the grass roots. As a Barnsley supporter with nothing to do but look back, I particularly enjoyed the sight of Amos the donkey, the club's 1910 mascot, outside the club's HQ at the Clarence Hotel, complete with jockey boasting umbrella, spurs and the inevitable cigarette.

5.0 out of 5 stars Half Time Browsing, 11 Aug 2002
By A Customer
As an amateur photographer and a football fan this book hits it's artistic and pictorial history targets spot on! My favourite shots are the Littlewoods Pools winners of the 1930's and the classic ariel view of Hackney Marshes. Great fun and great value, ideal for half time during the big match on TV.
