This review is from: The Celts (Hardcover)
This new account of the Celtic peoples, their origins, history, culture and present prospects, is based upon the six-part international television series commissioned by the Welsh language television channel, S4C. As the official book covering the series, it has been specially written and adapted by welsh historian and writer Dr John Davies. The series was first broadcast throughout the world in 2000-2001.
The book explores the origins and development of the Celtic peoples, examines the evidence for their role in the prehistory of mainland Europe and analyses the Celtic societies of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Brittany.
It discusses the notion that they were ‘the first Europeans’ and describes their rich artistic achievements, their conflict with the Roman Empire and their conversion to Christianity. It tells also of the later diaspora to all parts of the world and the spread of Celtic culture, languages, art and music.
It covers such topics as: who were the Celts; their heyday on the European Continent; their concepts of the spiritual world; the development of the Celtic communities of the Atlantic seaboard; the Celtic Church and the Celtic kingdoms; and the modern Celtic world.
Like the television series, it shows how a people, once feared for their ferocity, were also great romantics, with their myths and legends – the legends of king Arthur, above all. It extends from prehistoric Europe, through a near obliteration, to a new self-assertion as the third millennium opens.
Fully illustrated throughout with colour photographs, “The Celts” is a superb and highly informative account in its own right, as well as being the companion to the first full television history of the Celts to be made in many years.
