Product Description

Product Description

The battleship "Bismarck", flagship of the German Fleet Commander, was sunk by the British on her maiden voyage, 27 May 1941. By examining the role of high command in German naval strategic and operational decisions, this book shows how the disaster was probably the result of military strategy.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Experienced Naval Officer's Account, 23 Dec 2002
By s m waddingham (Golden Green, Kent United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This excellent book shows throughout the benefit actual seagoing experience and command of a naval vessel can bring to an account of a well known campaign like the chase and destruction of Bismarck. It was written before the recent expeditions to the wrecks of Hood and Bismarck, but this weakens it not at all. The author, whilst acknowledging other earlier secondary accounts like those of Mullenheim Rechburg, Ludovic Kennedy and Schofield, has done his own research on original documents as well. He reviews the protagonist's decisions and actions based on the information they had at the time, and places them in the context of the wider WWII picture.

Ignore the silly 'Publisher's Strapline'and buy this book if you want a clear, concise account based on hard evidence, minimal speculation and a seaman's experience.
