Product Description

Product Description
Roy Farran rose to command an SAS squadron during the Second World War. His classic account of the early years of the SAS became an immediate bestseller when it was first published. Covering action throughout the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Italy, this is the story of how Farran was captured, escaped and went on to lead some of the most daring operations of the war far behind enemy lines. It is a classic volume which demonstrates the fast learning curve required in the heat of battle.

About the Author
Roy Farran began the war in the Royal Armoured Corps and took part in tank battles in the North African desert before being shipped to Crete for the epic action against German airborne forces. He was captured, but escaped and joined the SAS on his return to Egypt. Eccentric and charismatic, Roy Farran was the officer who demanded a piper be parachuted to join his SAS team and their partisan allies for an attack on a German HQ miles behind the front. These stories and more are all part of this classic memoir.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sincere and factual. The stuff good Movies are made of., 21 Jan 2000
By A Customer
The story is an account of how the wartime SAS operated, with its moments of action, courage, glory, sadness and simply daily and human interaction. It tells of the difficulties in operations behind enemy lines with Resistance and Partisan groups as well those emanating from ones own commanders at home base. The stories are true as I can testify, having had the privilege of visiting most places in France and Italy myself. There I talked with French Resistance people as well as Italian Partisans that operated with Major Farran, alias Patrick McGinty. They confirmed the events as described in the book. It is a great adventure lived by a determined and courageous group of special forces soldiers, yet it also has its moments of humor. I would recommend this book to anybody aspiring to a leadership position, military or civilian. It provides true inspiration.

4.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional life's story of a man at war, 31 Mar 2007
By Tony Keene "Colonel Boris" (Hampshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
From the beginning of his career in tanks in the desert, through to SAS operation in France and Italy, this is a well written book that captures a lot of on-the-ground details of special service warfare of the time. Throughout the book, is a faint tinge of bitterness and disbelief appears, stemming from the accusation of murder he faced in postwar Palastine. There's about as much action as you're likely to find in a life story, written in such a way as to downplay the seriousness of it all without becoming jingoistic. It ties in nicely with W.B. ('Sandy') Thomas' Dare To Be Free as they were both wounded in the same battle and both escaped from the same camps to rejoin the war. Farran's career contained so much that an escape that filled an entire book for Thomas only occupies a chapter for Farran.
Well worth reading if you are interested in the SAS, World War II or just adventure in general.
