Product Description
Synopsis
An interdisciplinary work bringing together an international group of transgender writers, this text provides a collection of essays that are central to both academia and activism. Based on academic and "street" experiences, the book addresses the practical issues faced in changing the world view of gender while forcing theory a step forward from limitations of "queer", feminism and postmodernism. In a wide-ranging set of contributions, it addresses our engendered places now and what we can aim for in the future. It evaluates the mechanism we can use to galvanize both the micro theories of gender as a personal experience of oppression and the macro theories of gender as a site of social regulation. The collection aimes to take identity politics and reclaim identity for the "self".

From the Author
A quick comment on the writers and purpose of this book
As the other co-editor,I would like to recommend this book as a cutting edge collection of pieces by trans-academics and activists. The writers are transgender and transsexual people who know what it means to be trans, and in particular the theories that surround gender in universities today. They introduce the reality of their experiences into the theoretical constructs of gender and, I believe, provide a manual for trans/gender activism in the 21st century. They address gender theory through the lessons we have learnt from feminism and postmodernism. It is both a great introduction and a clear overview for students in many areas of gender study, as well as a guide to personal positioning and understanding for many trans people, their families and their friends
