Great Life-Size Photos of Marvellous Vintage Pens, 29 Jan 2001
This book is essential for all fountain pen collectors whether you are a beginner or an experienced sumgai. I picked up my copy at the London Pen Show and I was a bit unsure whether I should buy it or not, and there were about 5 or 6 people over there, all customers, all persuaded me to buy this book, and great advice they certainly offered! The pens are grouped under their manufacturer, and then the manufactuers are grouped under the country they have/had the majority of the production produced. The book is in 9 sections, the 7 country sections are: USA, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands & Belgium, and Japan. The 8th section talks about Limited Editions and Commemorative Issues, and the 9th talks about Materials and Techniques. At the end of the book, there's a short nib-history review. Under each country is a list of manufactuers, depending on how long a manufacturer has survived (or still surviving), the history of manufacturers takes from a quarter of a page (Aikin Lambert) to up to 30 pages (Sheaffer). In between are life-sized photos of pens, shown in chronological order. All pens are very fine sample of their kind, they're mainly vintage, some are prototypes - which is great as one would probably never see one in real life anyway. The only setback if there is one, is that the photos seem to be half a shade darker than pens in real life. All in all, it's a great book for learning about vintage fountain pens.
