5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, beautifully written., 30 May 2009
By A Norfolk Reader (Norfolk, UK) - See all my reviews
Biography can sometime be very dry. And endless list of events and dates and people that you knew a little about before (well, you were interested enough to buy their biography)and at the end of the book knew a little more about, but didn't really care about them at all.

This book is quite the reverse.

From the first paragraph you are gripped by David Waller's obvious affection for Gertrude Tennant - even the way the book came to be written is a romance in itself (undiscovered letters in an attic). The descriptions of places, people and events are captivating i.e. the wedding of Dolly (daughter of Gertrude) to the explorer H M Stanley is wonderful in it's detail and observation. And often very, very funny.

As you would expect from a journalist the research is impressive and thorough, but this is no trawl through dates and times but a vibrant, well written biography of a wonderfully fascinating woman and period.

A enthralling read in the company of one the most interesting women you are likely to meet.

Both well researched and well written. Through the prism of the magnificent Gertrude Tennant David Waller sheds light on the Victorian age and its literary lions. A great read. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography, 14 Aug 2009
It was the fate of Victorian women, with very few notable exceptions, to live in the shadow of men. Mrs Tennant was one such woman; she lived adjacent to greatness, moving in the highest literary and political circles, intimate with Gustave Flaubert and Henry Morton Stanley, Victor Hugo and William Gladstone, thereby "overcoming the constraints of her gender", as Waller notes. His urbane and fluidly written biography, drawing on her rediscovered private papers and correspondence with many of the "great white men" of the nineteenth century, offers a rewarding and unusual insight into a remarkable age through the person and the family of a notable woman. A pleasure to read.

The best biography I have ever read, its covers a period in history in great detail which is all due to the letters discovered and beautifully incorporated within the book.
