Product Description

W. Bruce Lincoln, Times Literary Supplement

"A fascinating tale ... A book that includes some of the most insightful chapters on eighteenth-century Russia to be found anywhere. An impressive accomplishment." --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Roger Williams, The Sunday Times

"This is a timely book, and with scholarship and a broad sweep, de Madariaga sorts the fact from the fiction that has grown up around Russia’s most powerful empress." --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 20 Sep 2001

Madriaga's book, although academic and with some dull parts does give you a real insight into the life of Catherine the Great and how an insignificant German Princess rose to be empress of Russia.

3.0 out of 5 stars Catherine the Great: A Short History, 18 April 2005
By A Customer
Praised by many historians, it is an informative and extremely detailed history, yet it is this detail which lets the book down. I felt that I read such a huge volume of information that the reading itself was made very dull, trying to sift through the detail to points that I found revelant to my course (I'm a student) was exhausting and mind numbing in the process. However once identified, the book is excellent.
