Product Description

Traces the evolution of the political role of Islam in Morocco from the 17th century to modern times. Integrating history and anthropology, Munson organizes his book around a series of conflicts that have exemplified the myth of the righteous man of God who dares to defy an unjust sultan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crucial insight into popular Islam, 26 Jun 2006
By Brian Griffith (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
Munson presents a dimension of North African culture which is commonly veiled to the outside world. He relates a history of popular morality, where those who stood up against tyranny were revered as the greatest saints of Islam. In a world where Western democracies commonly help Middle Eastern dictators to fight the threat of popular Islam, this is an important book.
