Product Description

Product Description

This second edition, like the earlier first edition, introduces some of the main varieties of Chinese as found before and after the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. While continuing to stress the basic importance of the traditional usages, such as the regular characters to be found in all materials published before the adoption of the simplified forms in 1956 and still in use in some areas, the present revision goes further in contrasting variant usages and in providing additional material relevent to the PRC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great self-learner book., 27 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This book will help you learn Chinese sentences. From basics onward (always using big-size ideograms) you start reading fairly adult sentences and paragraphs. Is it challenging? You bet! Sometimes it's like sparring with a mystery writer or devious crossword puzzle maker, but Mr. DeFrancis is pushing your mind to grow! Unfortunately, some of the ideograms have changed in Mainland China. (e.g., Car and East) On the other hand, when you start noticing that you can read simple Chinese sentences that are NOT IN THE BOOK you will be elated. Get ready for an effective, but excruciating challenge! This review applies to Part I.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for learning to read and write Chinese, 1 Jul 1997
By A Customer
This is an excellent book for learning standard - read traditional - Chinese characters. I'm learning Chinese in Taiwan where they still used the traditional characters and I have found it really quite good... so much so I'm buying a few more when I get home (U.S.A.) and will be bringing them back for my friends here. One thing the author should have done (in my view) is to have included the stroke order chart... which strokes to write in which order... in the first book and not in the second volume... but that's a small complaint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Want to read Chinese?, 12 Jun 2006
By K. Hung "Kenny" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am a British Born Chinese, and, like many in my situation, I never learned to write Chinese growing up. This book, coupled with the second part, is an excellent way of building up your knowledge of reading Chinese. Furthermore, the illustrative sentences give you a chance to practise your writing, although, clearly, the emphasis of these volumes is much more on the reading than on the writing.

The explanations of grammar points is excellent, and is obviously aimed at an English-speaking audience. I think it would have been useful to have translations of the reading texts, but I suppose that space was already at a premium.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the progress I am making with this book; it's no-nonsense, no-gimmick, here are your characters and vocab, get on with reading. Excellent.
