5.0 out of 5 stars Why this book is significant., 1 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This was the main source Shakespeare used for his play Richard III. All the great scenes from the play are in here: Lord Hastings is hauled away and executed for doubting that the Queen is responsible for Richard's withered arm.

In the last century, historians dismissed this book very much as a piece of Tudor propaganda, yet this in itself is an over-simplification. Letters and other evidence exist showing that contemporary English people never really accepted Richard as the true king. Letters by a Spanish merchant in 1486 said that most people regarded Richard's death as a just punishment for his bumping off his nephews, the princes in the tower.

It is possible that-in historical terms- this book is more accurate than it has been reputed to be. Either way, the prose is wonderful,it is extremely well-written and the incidental detail and anecdotes seized upon by Shakespeare. What more recommendation could a writer have?
