Product Description

Product Description

Women's labour has long been the linchpin of male status and power throughout Africa. This work interprets the intricate relations of gender to state-building in Africa by looking historically at control over production and reproduction from the 19th century to the 1990s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating work, 7 Jul 2005
By Sancho Mahle (Charlotte, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
A beautiful anthropological work on the semi Bantu people of Cameroon's North West province. The unique pattern of relation between men, women and children and the community in which they live explains the strong sense of solidarity that prevails in the region that the author beautifully captured. THE USURPER AND OTHERS, MAN NO BE GOD, MISSION TO KALA are other titles that go further to talk about the land and its unique people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Piece of Ethnography and Social Theory, 28 Oct 1998
By A Customer
Ms. Goheen adroitly locates her work in the grassfields of Cameroon within a rich theoretical framework. Fascinating reading for the anthropologist and layman alike.
