Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Most people will know two things about the garden at Highgrove--that it is organic and that, notoriously, the Prince of Wales talks to the plants he grows there. As The Garden at Highgrove lavishly demonstrates, it is a garden of very considerable interest and beauty, blending idiosyncratic touches into the traditional, romantic English country style. Although parts of the garden are laid out on a grand scale, much of it is intimate, forming a series of enclosed, room-like spaces. Evident everywhere is the Prince's respect for nature, from the underlying organic, self-sufficient methodology to the large-scale experiment in the restitution of a species-rich wild flower meadow. (The latter is expected to take at least a hundred years before the true balance of plant types is restored--an indication of the seriousness of purpose.) Although he has had advice and assistance from many leading garden and plant specialists, including Rosemary Verey, Sir Roy Strong and Miriam Rothschild, the Prince's personality, traditional-minded but with what seem to be strong streaks of competitiveness and bloody-mindedness, is everywhere apparent. Another presence, rarely alluded to, also haunts the place. Highgrove is an exemplary garden, and this is a very interesting book, beautifully illustrated and full of lessons in how hand and heart can work together in the garden. --Robin Davidson

Product Description
When The Prince of Wales bought Highgrove House in 1981 the surrounds consisted of a brown path which ran around the house, a lawn and a few thorn bushes. Twenty years later, he has transformed the land adjoining the house into several exquisite gardens which embody his gardening ideals and organic principles. With help from some of Britain's finest designers, including The Marchioness of Salisbury, Rosemary Verey, Miriam Rothschild and Sir Roy Strong, the Prince of Wales has created highly individual gardens which have now, with his own ideas, reached maturity. The Prince of Wales describes the thinking behind each garden, the mistakes and the triumphs, and his plans for the future. Lavishly illustrated with photographs which capture both the scope and detail of each garden, this book will delight and inspire both gardeners and horticulturalists at every level.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational book that reads as good as it looks, 29 Oct 2000
I recieved this book last week and havn't had my head out of it since! This would be classed as one of those publications termed a' coffee table book' absolutely beautiful to look at and the type you strategically place for all to see,but once you open it ,it gets even better. The photos inside are stunning and the commentary on how the garden evolved is interesting and informative without being heavy going. This book will inspire you whatever the size of your garden as all the ideas are adaptable and could easily be scaled down to suit the 'common' mans capabilities and budget(we havn't all got head gardeners tucked away!] There's also a very useful planting list at the back in great detail so if you see the picture of the pergola and it appeals it lists exactly the plants used and on which column etc so you can recreate the look. This book is not for the' ground force' gardener after instant effects in a weekend, but if you want a visually stunning and inspirational and suprisingly modern insight into a truly beautiful garden this is the book for you.I'm delighted with it

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for serious gardeners & part time browsers, 5 Jan 2001
This is the best gardening book I have ever read -it is full of new ideas, and stunning photographic evidence of the garden evolving.

It does not contain much in the way of technical knowledge, so if you fall in love with the planting you will need to refer to other sources for plant characteristics etc, but this does not detract from the book -indeed, it was not intended as a source of reference.

Quite the best Christmas present I received. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, 30 Jun 2004

This is a beautiful account of the transformation of the garden at Highgrove by the Prince of Wales. Whilst I do not have a country estate in which to garden, the pictures are inspirational to those of us who garden on a much smaller and humbler scale.

Very pleasant tour of the landscape and gardens at Highgrove, many views that the average person will never see and some that even most visitors will not see. Read more
