Product Description

Product Description
From two hundred light years across the universe comes a message of terror. Ten years from now, a new radio telescope picks up from the constellation of Andromeda, a complex series of signals which prove to be a programme for a giant computer. When the computer begins to relay the information it recieves from Andromeda, the project assumes a vital importance, for scientists find themselves possessing knowledge previously unknown to man, knowledge of such nature that the security of human life itself is threatened.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still worth blowing the dust off!, 21 April 2002
By Julian Day (Cambridge, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Written in 1962, in the early days of radio astronomy, this novel describes what happens when a new radio telescope picks up a signal that appears to be the product of extraterrestrial intelligence. When the message is decoded, and turns out to be the blueprint for a supercomputer, opinion is divided as to whether the experiments it asks its operators to perform are intended for our benefit or our undoing.

At 173 pages this book is more of a novella than a full-length novel, and it fails to explore the issues raised as fully as one might like. However, it is a vivid and sometimes disturbing read and it remains a seminal work of the science fiction genre.

2.0 out of 5 stars From BBC's heyday, but not one of its shining lights, 11 Jun 2007
By S. OBYRNE (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book reads like an episode of Dr Who, but without all the political correctness of the latest series. Apart from the, at times, derisive use of English the main problem with the story is that everything happens too easily. I mean, a bunch of binary numbers come through the receiving dish and before you can say, Holy Andromeda, the scientist in charge has figured out by page 37 (yes, folks, page 37) that it is an alien message telling us to make a computer. And, yes, we have the technology to build it. Just like that.

For a more accurate portrait of what it would probably be like to receive a message from the stars, I suggest reading Lem's 'His Master's Voice'. Even Carl Sagan's message in 'Contact' wa more convoluted and difficult to decipher than the one portrayed in A for Andromeda.
