5.0 out of 5 stars A charming, timeless classic about a unicorn's quest., 9 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I read this book as a child, and then again as an adult. Each time I loved the book, and I've kept it in my library as one of the classics.
The story is about a unicorn - the last of its kind - searching for the reason the others have disappeared. On his journey he meets a cast of incredible, magical characters in a travelling show. The whole story is beautifully written, and the ending is satisfying - what more can you ask?

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic of fantasy writing, 6 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I suppose that most people would be familiar with this book as the basis of the 80s animated film of the same name, but the book is neither trivial entertainment nor aimed at children. Beagle's writing has a bitter-sweet, poetic quality and a lightness of touch that never fails to impress me - it never degenerates into purple prose or the kind of cliche that can dog other fantasy writers, but is always original, sensitive and moving. I really can't praise this book enough.
