Product Description
From prehistoric times onwards, human beings have sought to hide uneasy reflections on their own mortality behind the more comforting concept of an eternity to which the apparently unchanging universe around them seemed to bear witness. Now, at present stage of our evolution, we stand poised at a frontier: science asks us to consider a universe that is itself mortal, with a beginning and therefore an end. Are we looking at the death of forever, the end of time? No, says Darryl Reanney in this groundbreaking synthesis of scientific knowledge and personal experience. The greatest flaw in our consciousness is our perception of time, which has led us to see death as an end - of ourselves and now of the cosmos - and has stimulated our yearning for everlasting life. "The Death of Forever" is a wonderful, unique exploration of the whole issue of immortal, in its physical, biological, and religious aspects. Dr Reanney accomplishes what no other writer has been able to do by drawing on a vast array of sources relativity theory, quantum mechanics, genetics, psychology, myth, cosmology and anthropology - to present an argument in which scientific truth and mystical belief blend harmoniously. In a sublime vision of hope he asks us to forget our notions of past, present and future and to contemplate a higher cosmic consciousness of which we are an indissoluble part - a consciousness that is timeless. Awesome in its concepts and yet compulsively readable, "The Death of Forever" provides factual evidence of immortality that should finally allay our secret fears. Its important message is surely the guide we need to carry us forward into the New Age.
About the Author
Darryl Reanny had a distinguished career as a molecular biologist, teaching at universities in New Zealand and Australia, and he also ran his own biotechnology company. He was internationally know for his work on the origin of life, and in 1982 he wrote and presented a seven-part series on genes and evolution, 'Genesis', for Australian television. His intense need to understand the deep tissues of life and to communicate them to a wide public led to the present book, which was an instant best seller in Australia and is now republished worldwide in a revised and enlarged edition.
