By 1970, the hippie dream of the 60s was dead - the sound track to revolution had become a multi-million dollar industry, and 'rock' had lost its 'roll'. Glitter tried to save music's soul, but was too commercial to be cutting-edge for long. Then in 1974, a rescue movement arrived on the streets of New York City. Within two years it had spread West to California, and then East to London. Punk was born. Three chords, black jeans, a pair of shades and a lot of attitude accompanied music whose intensity matched the hard facts of life on its home ground, New York's East Village.This is a first hand account of this little documented era - of life alongside Debbie Harry, Patti Smith, the Velvet Underground, David Bowie and the New York Dolls, of the gigs at CBGBs hitting the news as Warhol and his glittering crew descended - to its worldwide explosion, with Malcom McLaren hijacking the scene's momentum...'Gary was pretty much everywhere at the right time...it's fortunate that the man who wrote "X Offender" and "Presence Dear" survived to tell the tale so well' - MOJO.

About the Author
Gary Lachman, as Gary Valentine, was a founder member of Blondie, and wrote many of the group's early hits. This book is the story of the world from which Blondie grew, with rare and intimate insight, and includes anecdotes of his life alongside other luminaries of the era with whom he performed, including Iggy Pop. His first book for Sidgwick is Turn Off Your Mind, a history of the arc and roots of the occult counterculture of the Sixties. This is its natural sequel for the Seventies.

A real surprise. One of the best pop/rock autobiographies ever - definitely the best yet about the 1980s.
Valentine writes really well, and offers a personal account of delinquent youth, poverty in new york, the pop dream come alive in that very intense new york new wave scene (post Dolls ramones, television, talking heads etc) He joins Blondie and writes their first hits (X-Offender, Presence dear) but ducks out/is pushed when they sign a dreadful management deal to pursue solo work and to play with Iggy Pop. Is later chucked out of Blondie a second time (is that a record?) So he made it, he got initial acclaim, but never cashed in, never sold out.
Some harrowing moments, and some great fun.
He writes very revealingly, and wisely about his own naivety. Self deprecating, good sense of humour, literate but immediate.

Anyone interested in the NY punk scene of the 70s will love this excellent biog. Valentine is a great writer (his 'Turn Off Your Mind' written under his real name of Gary Lachman is a classic) and this is a highly entertaining and informative page-turner that name-checks all the main players and tells some great stories about many of them. There is a story about David Bowie that is worth the price of the book on its own. Highly recommended.

Being a Blondie fan I found this book so interesting to get 'the other version'. Mr Valentine totally brings to life New York early 70's and make's you feel as if you're there getting cold and hungry with him! He's a true rock 'n' roll star (was punk ever really the correct term to describe Blondie?). I understand he now lives in London but whatever else he does, to me, he'll always be the guy who wrote one of the best songs ever (I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence Dear.
Buy this book - it rocks!
