Product Description

Product Description

This text shows that mental disorders are not the result of singular causal factors but a mixture of biological, psychological and sociological developmental influences. It argues that studies of mental disorders must be guided by multicausal theories, and the monocausal biomedical model abandoned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice counterarguments to today's reductionism, 23 Jun 1999
By A Customer

Until this book, I would have believed Thomas Szasz was closest to the truth.

Kiesler attacks both biological and environmental reductionism, showing how neither premise is sound, and how empirical evidence contradicts both.

This will restore your confidence in science, after hearing endless nature-nurture debates about behavior from both sides.

Unfortunately therapeutic practicioners in both the biological and environmental camps have something to lose if this book's ideas are taken seriously, and so they will probably defend and reinforce their outdated beliefs, which assume a purely biological or environmental basis for behavior, in an attempt to achieve treatment.

This book is readable by non-practitioners. It provides a list of arguments and empirical evidence one can use against both biological and environmental reductionism.
