?The book surveys research on international study issued during the past two decades and the relevant literature available in English, French, German, Russian, and Spanish. The essay portion places international study in historical perspective, reviews past research, highlights the gaps in the research, and sets the context for a political economy of international study. Topics include the attitudes of international students and the host population; recruiting, admitting, and advising foreign students; academic achievement; evaluation of exchange programs; health issues; cost-benefit analysis; and foreign policy issues for governments. The bibliography is a selective and partially annotated list of 2,800 published and readily available studies, books, journal and magazaine articles, reports, and dissertations. It is topically organized and includes literature on a wide range of issues such as women's studies, studies in Eastern Bloc countries and China, foreign students in Third World countries, study at the community college level as well as at the university level, the cultural environment, and finally, returning to and reentering one's home country.?-Higher Education Abstracts
