3.0 out of 5 stars Only do the right stuff , 29 Aug 2008
By Peter Wade (Colchester England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The good thing about the How to do something in seven days school of writing is that you only have to think up seven points or chapter headings.

Day 1 What's the problem. This makes you thin about what you are doing or not doing

Day2 whats the system

Day 3 Don't do stuff. This is is the meat of the book. And it is covered by Learn to say no and let stuff go hang

Day4 Only do the right stuff. This is the whole book in a nutshell. Look at what you are doing and only do the right things.

Day 5 Do as little as possible when doing the right stuff.
this covers things by planning and ding things in the right sequence.

Day6 Some other skills 1 Planning the unplanned 2 create extra time in you life 3 Why don't be able to get more done 4 Don't get stressed

Day 7 Start now.

A tip if you write a how to book Chapter one is Where are you now? and the last chapter is now do it.

He says the book is not really a time management book as he says all they do is tech you a system and you end up doing more and more of what you were doing before. this book is trying to get you to think about what you are doing and concentrating on what is important , only doing that and of little as that as possible.

The book can be summarised in three points

1 Not doing stuff
2 only doing the right stuff
3 doing as little as possible when doing the right stuff.

The system is also easy to summarise

1 The list that is what you intend to do
2 A way of tracking appointments
3 a filing system
4 a away of recording where your time goes.

My biggest criticism is that there is no index. It is very easy these days with computers to do an index and d any serious book should have one. Perhaps Mr O' Connell could put that on his To do list.

I liked his comment on Prioritisation which was you hear people say

"I Have 5 priority one things to do 13 priority two things and 411 priority three things.2

Priority is If i could only do one things on this list what would it be?

I ask the question why do those who always claim to be too busy and never the most successful people in society? they wander around looking at their mobile phone, sending texts, checking their e mail sending emails yet never seem tho get the work done.

As part of my time management technique I don't do any of the following wash cars, do any gardening, any DIY watch sport on television , watch soap operas, so to pubs.talk to people on mobile phones. I find it releases up a lot of time for things like reading exercising and sleeping.

They never know any ones address , phone number or where things are?

I would suggest they are taking on too much and do not stick to the number one property before going on to number two.

They give excuses such I cant have a system because I am bombarded by work as soon as I get to work. If you say so!

A good thought provoking book and certainly worth a read. If you learn one thing from it and put it in to practice you will profit from it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful, but not ground breaking, 28 Mar 2009
By S. Gale "Stephen Gale" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I can't work out if I was expecting too much from this book or not. I read it in a couple of sittings and while enjoyable to read, I am not convinced that there were that many insights in the book.

Don't get me wrong, the material is useful and I am sure that many people will find it helps them in their everyday jobs. However, I can't help feeling that many of the readers that will be attracted to this book will already be practising the techniques suggested in this book. I know that I certainly do. They may not be absolutely identical, but there are similar enough.

The one thing that I will take away from this book is to work out which tasks to delegate and to delegate them IMMEDIATELY. I have a habit of only delegating tasks once they have been on my to do list for a while. I find that delegating them immediately lifts the burden instantly.

The book contains a number of questionnaires that you fill in as you progress. You will definitely get more out of the book if you complete them, but I can't help feeling that the questionnaires could have been presented in a more useful/attractive manner.

Overall, a useful book with some interesting hints and tips.
