Product Description

Product Description

This major text assumes no prior knowledge of IS or IT and builds both business and Information systems knowledge to enable the reader to choose the right systems, to develop them and to manage them effectively.

The three-part structure to the book covers:

  1. Introduction to business information systems
  2. Business information systems development
  3. Business information systems management

Suitable for any IS, BIS or MIS course from UG to MBA level within a Business or Computer Science Department.

From the Back Cover

Guides students through choosing, developing and managing information systems to achieve business aims.

In modern business, good development and management of business information systems are central to the success or failure of the organisation. Starting from first principles, this book provides you with the knowledge needed to understand:

  • the technology of business information systems,
  • the development of efficient and reliable business information systems,
  • the strategic use of information systems for effective management and competitive advantage.

This third edition has completely updated coverage of contemporary topics like security, knowledge management and new technologies and continues to develop the practical skills that students need for problem solving and designing systems in the real world.

Frequent business examples, case studies and web-links bring the subject alive and there are a wealth of questions, exercises and further reading both in the book and online at www.pearsoned.co.uk/bis which help students to check their understanding, complete assignments and prepare for exams.

Business Information Systems is ideal for students taking a course in Business or Management Information Systems, Business Information Technology or Computer Science.

"Linking technology and management has never been easier. This is a great book, containing almost everything a business student should know about Information Systems." - Dr. R.H.J. 4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book...., 11 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This book practically got me through the last year of my degree in Business Information Systems! The majority of topics to do with IT/IS are dealt with this book in good detail. Each chapter contains definitions of the key terms, case studies and activities and concludes with a list of further reading and relevant web links. The book is well written, nicely laid out and contains up-to-date information.

A must for any IT/IS student!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good Jack of all!, 29 April 2005
By A Customer
I'm about to finish an IT and Management BSc course. We (everyone on the course!) bought this book in 2002 - and yes, I know it says published in 2003! ;) - This has been the best book on our entire course:
a) I've read the entire book (unusual for this kind of text),
b) I've referenced this book the most,
c) there's pretty much a bit of everything in it.
It covers most IT management topics (strategy etc.) - and is very good if you need to waffle about something you have not got a specialist book on (that is, minor points such as 'Resistance to Change').

5.0 out of 5 stars Alot about everything, 30 May 2007
By Christopher Morgan "Chris" (Liverpool, England) - See all my reviews
This book is brilliant for anyone doing a business or management course at university or someone who may want a broad insight into the working of information systems.

This is really a great reference book for many subjects that you may cover and contains alot of useful information. Its not really a book you read right through but having used it as somewhat of a dictionary I can say it is the most useful book I own or have read in regards to the 'Information Systems' subject.

Very much worth the cost and better and more comprehensive than any other IS book. Recommended by my university lecturers as a great text book for my BIS subject and now me as a great time saving mini library.
